Multiplayer online games have been dominating the market for many years now but what exactly does it take to build such a game? In this talk I will give an explanation of how games allow for players to reconnect to a running session to which they have previously lost their connection. In addition, we will take a look at Crytek's Hunt: Showdown as an example of a game that added support for this long after its initial release.

My name is Valentin Klink and I have studied game development at Hochschule Darmstadt, Germany from 2014 until early 2019 in a course called 'Animation and Game'. After my sixth semester in 2017 I was approached by Crytek and started working on their upcoming multiplayer game Hunt: Showdown on which I have worked ever since. The game entered and left Early Access in 2018 and 2019 respectively, has been released on PC and consoles and today is actually more popular than ever. Nowadays I am a Senior Gameplay Programmer and give talks and lectures at various universities including my alma mater.
